Kingdom Sisterhood

by Britt Silcox

The more I hear about the theme for this year’s SHE conference, the more my anticipation rises. I believe the God-idea of “sisterhood” is so complex and vast and higher than my current way of thinking. “Kingdom Sisterhood” is so much more than a girl’s night out, or a “let’s do coffee soon” promise. It is actually a greater way of living and a new way of loving. If we want to experience Kingdom Sisterhood for ourselves and then create atmospheres of this for others, it is going to require we find a new perspective.

For all of you brave enough to jump into this new place together, can I just start by saying, I am REALLY excited that the Creator of the Universe has an upgrade for our way of thinking and interacting with each other! (I Corinthians 2:9) Can you even imagine how much ground can be taken for the Kingdom of God when we as sisters get in step with the beat of heaven?

I don’t know about your yard, but even the back porch flower box my husband planted for me at mother’s day with the cutest succulents have a weed popping out today that needs to be pulled. I didn’t give permission for that weed to grow there nor did I see anyone place it there… but to my dismay it grows.

Jesus tried to prepare us for this anomaly in the parable of the wheat and the tares (Matthew 13:24). He warned us that as we are pursuing the Kingdom of God, it would be like the farmer who planted wheat but when he was asleep, weeds had been sown in his field.

So let’s agree it is safe to assume- no matter how much we love Jesus that it is possible something lesser has been planted in the garden of our heart that needs to be replaced. Lay that reality over the soil of Sisterhood and we have plenty of reason to humble ourselves and find the weeds choking out the beauty intended.

As a company of women stepping into the SHE Conference 2019, let’s prepare for this season of growth ahead by accepting this challenge:

Challenge #1- Check yourself before we even start this journey.

Start by asking, “Holy Spirit, will you search my heart and highlight where you are calling me to humble myself?”

That’s right… each of us have spaces inside our hearts and thoughts that are due for a refresh. Humility is a prerequisite for revelation. When I believe I am doing pretty well the way I am, I am far less likely to seek out God’s input on a matter.

I mention this so you won’t disqualify yourself from learning and growing spiritually just because the last time you checked everything was “A-OK”. James 4:6 says that God resists the proud but gives His grace to the humble. When we think we know it all or don’t have any area needing change, we won’t hear the small voice of the Holy Spirit leading us to the grace we need to come up higher.  It will take humility to experience the Kingdom of God on earth and it will require humility to walk in Kingdom Sisterhood.

For me that sounds like this…
“Holy Spirit, I give you full permission to show me any area I can humble myself and love higher. Please show me where I can grow in the way I think about sisterhood”.
Simple right? You would be amazed how connecting with God and inviting Him to adjust your perspective will OPEN YOUR EYES!

Challenge #2- Remind yourself that there is only ONE King to this Kingdom (and it’s not you!)

The sisterhood part of the equation only works when we have FULLY submitted to King Jesus. Trying to have one without the other simply will not work. As soon as I invite the Lord to show me spaces to love higher or love differently, my very skilled defense attorney inside my brain will bring the best case as to why I am totally justified to stay the way I am. It may remind me of how I was raised, or how other women have treated me, or bring up the kind of concerns that cause insecurity, fear of rejection, fear of losing control etc.

We have all heard those voices of excuse. So, let’s make a pact ahead of time. Think of it like when you set your mind to eat healthy so you don’t even bring the new thin lemon Oreos to the pantry (I’m sure that is just me- not you – that can polish off a whole sleeve in a single sitting and wonder where they went  J) Before the conference even starts, let’s agree to lay our opinions and experiences down and pick up a full surrender. If God highlights something to us, before we even go into that long and windy path of human reason, we will stop ourselves and say, “Yes Lord”. Your ways are not my ways. Your thoughts are not my thoughts. I choose yours even though I may not understand them.

What happens next? The spirit of God will illuminate the path to making things right. Whatever He tells you to do just DO it! But that might be difficult or uncomfortable right? Don’t delay just do it whether it is something large or small. It could be a single change within yourself or may require you to go to another person. But what was in disorder will feel like a newly decorated room you want to be in. Light will shine through the windows of your heart and makes everything feel new. In that moment you will remember who is actually in charge of your life. Jesus!

Trust in the Lord completely,

and do not rely on your own opinions.

With all your heart rely on him to guide you,

and he will lead you in every decision you make.

Become intimate with him in whatever you do,

and he will lead you wherever you go.

Don’t think for a moment that you know it all,

for wisdom comes when you adore him with undivided devotion

and avoid everything that’s wrong.

Then you will find the healing refreshment

your body and spirit long for.

  1. I read a story a few years ago about a term used in construction. When a joist support beam becomes weak, tired, and sagging, the carpenter will then take another beam and attach it on the left. Then will take another and attach it to the right of that weak beam. By doing this it strengthens that weak beam. The term for this is “sistering”.
