Right now our Jewish brothers and sisters are celebrating the Festival of Purim, so I thought it only fitting that we talk about Esther. A woman who surely had no idea just how very valuable she was until her very specific purpose was unfurled in front of her like a large foreboding map.
I think we can all agree that the ending, the X marks the spot, of that map and the route to get to it was something she would never have chosen for her calling.
– Raised by her single uncle
– Carted off like livestock with other women to be paraded in front of the king
– Chose to surrender herself to the kings wishes even though it went against every bit of her upbringing
– Became Queen Esther
– Forgotten by the king
– Asked to risk her life to save the lives of her people and all of their generations to come
Who in their right mind would choose each step of this path? No one! But that is why our King only reveals bits and pieces of our life maps to us. I don’t know about you, but as much as I love the refining my Father has done in me, I most certainly would not have agreed to my journey route had I seen it before hand.
When I was going through one of the hardest times of my life, advice and “words of encouragement” seemed to be unending. One of the most common things I heard was “but just think how powerful your testimony is going to be!” Huh?! Sisters. Please let me give a tiny piece of advice here. That is not the thing to say to the wounded and the broken. It may be absolute truth. And it is a crucial part of our map painstakingly drawn by our loving Creator, but it is not comforting when a wound is fresh. The time for those words will come as healing begins.
I can only imagine that Queen Esther felt similar confusion and pain when her uncle told her that laying down her life and revealing the truth of who she was the very thing she was called to do…. While she did not find comfort in those words, I believe she did choose to find strength.
Esther’s story and mine, and yours are all very different. But she and you and I are all gently created with the same Worth. There is a time for each of us. A time that all of our stories are leading up to. And beautiful sister, I am here to tell you that your value to Him is priceless. For you truly are created for your specific “Such A Time As This.”
